Split Second Design Worksheet

1. The way an audience perceives the play is shaped by the choice of performance venue, as well as the set that is designed for the play. Indeed, all the elements that you see and hear during a performance are bound to shape your perception of the play. Which of the following venues do you think can best meet the needs of the play?
I would say that a proscenium arch would be ideal for this production. There are various settings and locations in this play, and the size and span of a proscenium arch would allow for the production and incorporation of those scenes effectively.

2. What are some of the challenges posed by the play on the stage design team?
An issue that I could foresee occurring is how the production team would get a car on the stage, if there were willing to incorporate alive car and not recreate one, which is most likely what would happen in its production. Another issue I could see is that int e opening scene in the darkness that could be difficult to convey what is going on, because a central part of the scene is that it was dark outside when Val nabbed the crook. Moreover the play’s constant changing locations from indoor to outdoor, with variances in lighting could pose a challenge to the stage design crew.

3. Choose a character from the play and suggest how she/he should be dressed. In what ways do you think the costume would help accentuate his/her character? Be sure to indicate which scene you have selected to costume that character. You might even upload a picture of the kind of dress you think would be suitable for that character to wear.
Concerning Alea, as she is a teacher, I would dress her in comfortable attire as I presume teaching, particularly young children, is much more physically demanding. I would dress her in jeans or slacks, as well as a button up blouse, and glasses, and some tennis shoes, preferably keds. This attire would be suitable for the scene tha Alea first appears in as she is grading papers, if I assume that she hasn't changed her wardrobe since entering the house.

4. Given the content of the play, how might the lighting design help further the mood of the production? Move thru the play scene by scene to provide a possible progression.
Dark lighting in the beginning would be ideal to fit the dark, somber, night mood of the initial scene. In the middle of the play, standard lighting would be great. HOwever, at the finale of the play when Val is being interrogated a spotlight akin to a “good cop bad cop” film would be ideal as it would illustrate the tension and pressure that Val is under.

5. Suggest music or sound effects that might be used to accentuate the mood or atmosphere of the play and the transitions between parts of the play. You might even choose to upload music or sound effects that you think are suitable for the play, or moment in the play, or as preshow music or transitions from one scene to another.
The buildup when William is calling Val names before he is shot would be suitable with violins or a sort of orchestral arrangement. Of course, the piece would hit a crescendo and a high when Val pulls the trigger, and a low as he deliberates how he will frame the situation to his advantage.
